Approaching 5 years of dating, Derek decided it was time to pop the question!

With a trip already planned to Cartagena, Colombia, where Niqui was born, Derek knew he had the opportunity of the lifetime and decided to begin planning!

After months of planning, and months of trying to keep many secrets from Niqui, it was finally September and Niqui could finally show Derek where she was born and the beauty of Cartagena!

Monday, September 16th had come and it was time to celebrate Niqui's uncle's wedding with a welcome party with all their family, or so she thought!

As they got ready, Derek anxiously pacing and Niqui having 0 clue that she would be proposed to in just a couple hours, the Cartagena skies gloomed and it was the tropical storm of the year! With a rooftop proposal planned, Derek was nervous about what they would walk into but knew it would still be an unforgettable night.

Luckily, the skies cleared as they approached the hotel, the most beautiful sunset began to shine and it was time!

Derek led Niqui up fights of stairs, "Fast Car" lightly playing in the backround, and up to a path of roses leading to a heart of more roses and a sign that read "Will you Marry Me."

Niqui began to realize that she would not be celebrating her uncle tonight but her's and Derek's engagement!

Derek got down on one knee and sparklers went off as Niqui said "Yes!"

Then a roar of happy yells came from all their family who had, also unknowingly, came to celebrate their engagement!

When Derek and Niqui began thinking of where they wanted to get married, they thought no better way to celebrate than the place where they got engaged!
